The Missing Piece: Why Pilates Became Part of My Fitness Journey

If you had told me five years ago that I would one day open a second training location - and that it would be a Reformer Pilates studio - I probably would have laughed. For most of my life, fitness meant strength training and running. From the military to graduate school to coaching clients, I built my career around helping people get stronger and perform better.

To be clear, I truly believe strength training is one of the most valuable things a person can do for overall health and longevity. It’s just that within my fitness journey, I realized getting stronger isn't always the same as moving better.

1. Getting Stronger Isn't Always the Same as Moving Better
As a trainer, I've worked with hundreds of people with different goals such as losing weight, building muscle, recovering from an injury, or simply trying to stay active as they get older. I noticed people were achieving those goals yet still struggled with balance, mobility, posture, and flexibility. Strength and performance matter but the quality of our movement matters also

2. Discovering Pilates
My introduction to Pilates wasn't because I was looking for the next fitness trend. It started after I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder, and like many people navigating autoimmune conditions, I had to become more intentional about how I trained. I still loved strength training and conditioning, but I also had to consider recovery. I needed a way to continue exercising consistently without feeling like I was constantly trying to play catch-up with my recovery. That's when I began exploring Pilates. What I didn't expect was everything else it would give me.

While continuing to strength train and condition, I noticed improvements in my balance, flexibility, body awareness, and deep core strength. Just as importantly, I found that my ability to recover from Pilates was much better and let me continue training on a consistent schedule.

Despite what some people assume, Pilates wasn't easy. The challenge was simply different. It required concentration, control, precision, and endurance in ways I hadn't fully experienced before. The more I practiced, the more I realized Pilates wasn't replacing my training - it was enhancing it.

3. What Pilates Taught Me
Pilates taught me that being strong and controlling that strength are not always the same thing. Many of us can compensate our way through movement by relying on stronger muscles, using momentum, or pushing through limitations. Pilates doesn't allow that as easily. It exposes imbalances, highlights areas where stability is lacking, and challenges you to move with intention.

For me, it reinforced something I've been teaching clients for years: the goal isn't simply to exercise. The goal is to move well for life.

4. Why I Brought Reformer Pilates to Pelham
As my appreciation for Reformer Pilates grew, I started thinking about the people I work with every day. The clients who want to stay active without feeling beat up. The busy professionals dealing with aches and pains from long hours at a desk. The people looking to improve their balance, mobility, and confidence in movement. I realized Pilates could help all of them.

The more I learned, the more I felt our community deserved access to high-quality Reformer Pilates in a welcoming environment focused on helping people move better and feel better. That's what ultimately led to the creation of Bug Out Reformer Studio.

5. The Missing Piece
In closing, adding Reformer Pilates hasn't been a complete overhaul of my fitness journey. It's simply been the next step. It expanded my understanding of movement, challenged assumptions I didn't realize I had, and made me a better coach and student.

For some people, Pilates may become their primary form of exercise. For others, it may complement strength training, running, or another activity they already enjoy.

Either way, the goal remains the same: to move better, feel better, and stay strong, capable, and active for years to come.

That's what it means to Train for Life.

Bug Out was founded in 2020  to create a training space rooted in safety, authenticity, and personal growth. After years of working in environments that didn’t align with how I wanted to serve others, I decided to build a place where I could do just that.  My path down this road began when I enlisted in the Alabama Army National Guard and I learned the importance of physical and mental readiness. This experience reshaped how I viewed movement and health. The Bug Out brand is built on the belief that fitness is about building strength, confidence, and readiness for whatever life brings your way.
